11/26/2011 – The women's basketball team lost a heart breaker to Hope College 66-65 at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center. The 15th ranked Flying Dutch improved to 4-1 on the season, while the Saints' season mark fell to 4-4.
In a very evenly matched game, the Saints found opportunities and almost pulled off the upset over their neighbors from Holland. The new look Flying Dutch are trying to establish an identity, while the vastly improved Saints continue to play competitive basketball.
The Saints spotted Hope an early ten point advantage before finding their own rhythm. Aquinas quickly widdled the lead down and took a one point lead at the 10:36 mark on a two point make by Carly Bardwell. After the early runs the two teams settled in and finished the half with the Flying Dutch holding a 31-26 advantage.
The inspired play continued in the second half as the Saints continued to "hang around". Aquinas found themselves in position for the go ahead basket in the closing minute, but failed to execute and found themselves on the wrong end of a one point game. The Saints were led Taelor Sanders who guided the Saints with 16 points, eights assists, and six rebounds. Anne Marie Shumaker, Liza Flewelling, and Allison Heberlein all contributed double digit scoring efforts for Aquinas. Courtney Kust paced Hope with 15 points.
The Saints will return to the court on Monday as they travel to Olivet (1-3) to play the Comets.
