01/12/2012 – Aquinas erases a 21 point second half deficit to defeat Concordia 58-52 in Ann Arbor. The comeback victory lifts the Saints to a 9-10 overall record and Aquinas now sports a 5-2 mark in the WHAC, while Concordia slipped to 9-9 on the season and 5-3 in league play. The win also moved the Saints into a second place tie in the overall WHAC standings with Cornerstone.
The two teams traded baskets for most of the first half until Concordia went on a mini 12-5 run to end the first half of play. The Cardinals seven point halftime advantage quickly swelled to 21, as Concordia opened the half on a 16-2 run. At this point the preverbeal tide turned as the Saints defense took over of the game. Air tight defense combined with conversions on the offensive end enabled Aquinas to silence the Concordia crowd. The Saints finished the game on a 32-5 explosion and came all the way back to earn a key WHAC victory.
Jake Shockey's double-double (11 points & 11 rebounds) combined with his defensive play was instrumental in the Saints victory. Joe Powers once again spearheaded the offensive attack as he led Aquinas with 19 points. Zach Eddy also netted double figures as he contributed ten points to the Saints cause. Rocko Holmes led Concordia with 27 points and eight rebounds.
The Saints will look to ride the momentum of this win into Saturday's showdown with #4 Davenport (17-2, 7-0 WHAC). The two teams at the top of the league standings will renew their rivalry at 3 p.m. at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
