01/22/2012 – Rumeal McKinney and the men's middle distance crew led the Saints at the Mike Lindts Open hosted by Grand Valley State. Aquinas recorded 25 personal bests, eight national qualifiers, seven "Top 5" Aquinas performances and one school record Friday night.
The men's 800 meter highlighted the night as four Saints hit the automatic qualifying standard. Dustin Heiler, who won the event, bested his previous school record by almost one second. Heiler's time of 1:52.78 has him ranked third nationally. Aquinas also received top five performances by Grant Gunneson (#2 All-Time - 1:54.21), Nick Thelen (#3 All-Time - 1:54.54), and Caleb Teachout (#5 All-Time - 1:55.26).
The distance team also enjoyed success as three provisional qualifying times were hit. Devin Lea's 15:02.27 represented the fourth fastest indoor 5000 meter in school history. The women also received strong performances by Carly Plank (3000 meter - 10:30.81) and Alina Dhaseleer (5000 meter - 18:27.77).
Erika Heston hit the "A" standard in the 60 meter hurdles (9.19) to punch her ticket to Geneva, Ohio. The throws were highlighted by Emily Smith's personal best in the Shot Put (40-8.25 - #4 All-Time), while Rumeal McKinney stayed unbeaten as he cruised to a win in the 60 meter (6.81).
The Saints will return to action on Friday as they will compete in the Calvin College Invitational.
