ITA Tennis Invades Grand Rapids

09/24/2010 – Aquinas College and Grand Rapids are currently playing host to twelve teams and over 100 athletes who are taking part in this three day tournament.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association this year celebrates 50 years of supporting and guiding college tennis. Founded in 1956 as the national Collegiate Tennis Coach Association, its initial purpose was to express the wishes of Division I tennis coaches to the NCAA. Since then, the organization has expanded to include coaches representing over 1,000 collegiate tennis programs from NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, and junior/community colleges.

In cooperation with USTA, ITW formulates rules specific to collegiate tennis. There are published yearly in the official “rulebook” for tennis, Friend At Court, and govern college play at all levels.

ITA is the “voice” of college tennis, and seeks in numerous ways to enhance the visibility of tennis as a collegiate sport. ITA sponsors regional men’s and women’s tournaments throughout the country each fall. Regional champions advance to national championships events in October.

Cedarville University is represented in ITA’s operational structure by Murray Murdoch and Dee Morris. Dr. Murdoch has a long history of ITA involvement, and currently serves on the Executive and Budget Committee. Dr. Morris has served as women’s NAIA Ranking Coordinator for a number of years.

The matches are being contested at Gainey Athletic Complex, Orchard Hills Tennis Center, East Hills Athletic Club, Michigan Athletic Club and MVP Sportsplex and run through Saturday afternoon.
