02/19/2012 – The men's basketball team closed the regular season with a loss to Madonna 52-48. The victory improved the Crusaders record to 18-12 on the season and to 12-6 in the WHAC, while the Saints fell to 15-15 overall and to 11-7 in league play.
The stakes were high as the long time WHAC foes took to the floor in Livonia. Home court and seed placements for the upcoming WHAC tournament were hanging in the balance. With that being said the Saints gained an early advantage in the tussle. Zach Eddy, who scored 14 first half points, keyed the Saints play as Aquinas led 24-10 with five minutes to play in the half. The Crusaders rallied and scored the final eleven points of the half to trim the lead to three (24-21) at halftime.
The score between the two teams stayed tight during the early stages of the second half. Aquinas used a 9-0 run midway through the half to give themselves a little breathing room. The favor was quickly returned as the Crusaders rattled off the next ten points to take a one point lead with 7:35 to play in the game. The Saints held their last lead at 48-47, but were outscored (5-0) down the stretch and fell 52-48. The Saints out rebounded the Crusaders 43-29, but Madonna's bench out scored Aquinas' 29-0. Zach Eddy led the Saints with 22 points and eight rebounds. Joe Powers chipped in with 17 points for the Saints.
The Saints will enter postseason play as the fifth seed in the WHAC Tournament. Aquinas will travel to Fort Wayne to battle Indiana Tech on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in opening round action.
