02/26/2012 – Aquinas College's Rumeal McKinney spent the weekend in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the USATF Indoor National Championships. The senior sprinter from Southfield, Michigan competed in the 60 meter dash sporting his Aquinas colors. McKinney was among the nation's elite at this prestigious event.
McKinney qualified for the championships by posting a time of 6.68 at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open back in December. Since that performance, McKinney has spent countless hours prepping and preparing his mind and body for these championships. A huge feat and honor in itself, McKinney entered the meet with nothing to lose and everything to gain. A fearless competitor, McKinney was the 2009 NAIA Indoor National Champion in the same event.
Rumeal was assigned to the first of three heats that would determine which 16 athletes would advance to the semifinal round. McKinney's heat featured former World and Olympic gold medalist, Justin Gatlin. Gatlin won the heat in a blazing 6.51 with Rumeal crossing the finish line at 6.84. McKinney did not advance on time, but gave everyone associated with the Aquinas College Track & Field program a sense of pride and accomplishment. Our athlete, our teammate, and our friend had just represented us all at track's highest level.

The sprinter extraordinaire will return home today and join the rest of his teammates at the NAIA National Championships in Geneva, Ohio this upcoming weekend.
