03/01/2012 – The opening day of competition is in the books at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio. The day was highlighted by the advancement of the Men's DMR and Devin Lea into Saturday's event finals.
Lea recorded the third fastest time in school history in the 5k (14:54) to advance to Saturday's twelve man final. Grant Gunneson, Caleb Teachout, Nick Thelen, and Dustin Heiler cruised to a heat victory in the DMR (Distance Medley Relay). The foursome's time of 10:10 was the fifth fastest time in Aquinas history and will put them in the hunt for All-American honors on Saturday.
The lone female competitor of the day also had a very strong performance. Alina Dhaseleer completed the 5k in 18:18. The effort was the second fastest time ever run by an Aquinas women. Dhaseleer's performance placed her 13th overall in the preliminaries round, narrowly missing the finals by one spot.
The men's 4x4 relay (Ray Bordeaux, Nate Hicks, Jason Parnell, and Caleb Teachout) raced to a season's best 3:18, while the men's 4x8 relay (Charles Irmen, Jesus Alvarado, Stephen Huizing, and Zack Potgeter) placed 17th with a time of 7:55. The 4x400 meter performance was the second fastest time recorded in school history.
Competition resumes tomorrow at 1 p.m.
