04/25/2012 – The women's softball team defeated Cornerstone University twice in a non-league doubleheader. The pair of wins boosts the Saints' record to 25-20, while setting Cornerstone back to a 12-26 season record.
The Saints jumped out in front of the Golden Eagles with a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one. The runs were scored thanks to RBI singles from Tubergen, Lowe, and Stowell. Aquinas' Ashley White held the Golden Eagles scoreless until the sixth inning. In the sixth, Cornerstone's Oberst hit a two-run home run off of White to break the egg for the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone scored the tying run in the top of the seventh to make the score 3-3. The Saints quickly answered, loading the bases with one out. Renae Tubergen had the game winning hit, driving a single to right field for a walk-off RBI. The 4-3 victory puts Ashley White's record at 4-9 for the season.
The second game was chalk full of excitement as well. This time it was Cornerstone that jumped out to an early lead. The Golden Eagles went ahead 1-0 in the first, but the Saints scored one quickly thereafter in the bottom half of the inning. The game stayed tied at 1-1 until the sixth when Cornerstone put up two runs on the Saints. In the bottom half of the inning a passed ball allowed Tubergen to score. The Saints used a single up the middle by Stowell to push Becky Lesko across the plate, tying the game at 3-3. Sam Klinkner followed by driving in two more runs with a homer to left-center. The Golden Eagles tried to retaliate in the seventh, even scoring one more run but, Becca Shineldecker and the Saints' defense held them at bay. The 6-5 win over Cornerstone boasts Shineldecker's season record to 10-3.
The Saints are back in action Wednesday in Adrian against Siena Heights (5-7) at 4 p.m.
