09/29/2012 – The men's soccer team defeated Madonna by the count of 2-1 in front of many current and former students at Homecoming 2012. The Saints ran their record to 7-3-1 on the season and to 2-1 in the WHAC, while the Crusaders fell to 4-5-1 overall and to 0-2-1 in the league.
With the campus abuzz from the festival atmosphere that surrounds Homecoming, the Saints soccer team treated everyone to a victory against the always tough Crusaders of Madonna. Michael Gagnon was king on the soccer field as the junior from Spring Lake scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Saints to the win. Gagnon's goal during the sixth minute opened the scoring for the Saints. Tyler Fischer added to the lead during the 31st minute on a play set up by Gagnon. Fischer's goal was his ninth of the season.
The Crusaders responded with a goal in the second half by Doug Beason, but could not climb any closer as the Saints marched to the 2-1 victory. Mike Sweers notched the victory in net as he recorded four saves on five shots on goal.
The Saints, who are currently in fourth place in the WHAC, will travel to Southfield to battle Lawrence Tech (1-9, 0-3 WHAC) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
