10/10/2012 – The women's soccer team was defeated by Davenport by the count of 3-1 on the Panthers home turf. Davenport improved to 4-0 in the WHAC and to 11-2 overall, while the Saints fell to 5-8 on the year and to 1-3 in league play.
The Saints and Panthers hooked up earlier this season in a non-league affair that saw the Panthers win 6-0. The stakes were higher on this night as both teams are jockeying for post season position in the upcoming WHAC Tournament. The host Panthers lit the scoreboard first with a goal by Letesha Cannonier during the 12th minute of play. Davenport, who are currently tied with Indiana Tech for the WHAC lead, added a second goal halfway through the first half. This time it was Thelma Gylfadottir who found the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
The Saints cut the lead in half during the 61st minute of play as Kelly Petzold's shot on goal eluded the Davenport goal keeper. The goal was Kelly's third of the season and kept the Saints within striking distance. Unfortunately for the Saints, Petzold's goal was all they could muster on this night. The Panthers Tam Grzybowski added an insurance late in the second half to secure the conference win. Michelle Marcus was awarded the win as she recorded one save, while her counterpart, Molly O'Conner saved five balls and allowed three goals. The Panthers out shot the Saints 16-6.
The Saints will look to get back in the win column on Saturday when they host Cornerstone (10-2, 2-1 WHAC) at 1 p.m.
