11/17/2012 – The men's soccer team bowed out of the National Tournament with a 2-1 loss at the hands of second ranked Rio Grande. The Red Storm advanced to the round of 16 with a record of 16-2-1, while the Saints season comes to a close with a mark of 13-6-3.
The Saints, who were competing in their first championship since 2000, were looking to spring the upset over NAIA power Rio Grande. The Red Storm struck first with a goal in the 20th minute of play by Luiz Filho. The Saints would score the equalizer in the 29th minute as Heath Somers knotted the match at one goal a piece. A late first half goal by Richard Ishberner lifted the Red Storm to the 2-1 advantage at the half.
The final 45 minutes came and went with neither team able to find the back of the net. The Saints season would end, but not before a valiant effort by Coach Veal's crew. The Red Storm out shot the Saints 17-6 (11-3 on goal) and will now switch their attention to Hannibal-LaGrange in the Round of 16.
The 2012 Saints were only the second team in school history to advance to the NAIA Championships and the future-Saints will look to continue the strong tradition that Coach Veal has created within the Men's Soccer program at Aquinas College.
