12/01/2012 – The men's basketball team netted a conference win at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center over their guests from Dearborn. The victory improved the Saints record to 3-8 overall and to 2-2 in the WHAC, while the Wolves fell to 0-4 in league play and to 2-8 on the season.
The Saints, who were looking for back to back conference wins, laid claim to an early advantage. A three point make by Conner McCane at the 9:55 mark gave the Saints an early 21-6 cushion. The lead would swell to as many as 19 in the first half before the two teams headed to their respective locker rooms with the Saints sporting a 33-15 lead. The Aquinas defense held the Wolves to 28% shooting in the half, while McCane and backcourt mate, Brett Pfahler, led the Saints with eight apiece.
The Saints continued to add to their advantage as Pfahler's three point make at the 7:22 mark of the second half lifted the Saints to a 24 point buffer. Pfahler, a junior from Coopersville, finished the contest with 20 points to pace the Saints. A late rally by the Wolves closed the gap slightly, but they still found themselves on the short end of 65-51 verdict. Austin Semple also produced a solid stat line as the junior from Zeeland scored nine points and grabbed a dozen rebounds.
The Saints will now travel to Sylvania, Ohio to battle Lourdes (5-3, 2-2 WHAC) at 7:30 p.m on Tuesday.
