12/05/2012 – The men's basketball team was defeated by Lourdes University in a game played at the Stroh Center on the campus of Bowling Green University. The victory improved the Wolves record to 6-3 overall and to 3-2 in league play, while the Saints fell to 2-3 in the WHAC and to 3-9 on the season.
The Saints, who were looking to extend their conference winning streak to three, found themselves in a defensive minded heavyweight match-up with the Wolves. Both teams prefer to slow it down and execute the offense, while relying on their defenses to provide the necessary spark. Tonight's game was no exception as both teams were held under 35% shooting from the field.
The Wolves stayed one step ahead of the Saints in the games first twenty minutes and led 32-24 at the halftime break. The lead quickly evaporated as the Saints scored nine of the first ten points to start the second half. With the game tied at 33 with 14:42 to play things started to get interesting.
The remainder of the contest saw six ties and eight lead changes. The Saints, who've already been in five games decided by five points or less, knew they would be in it for the long haul against the pesky Wolves. Trailing by two in the games final moments, the Saints had their chance to send it into overtime. A failed field goal attempt as time expired left the Saints on the short end of a 53-51 scoreboard.
Aquinas was led by freshman Brandon Walker who recorded a double-double with ten points and 12 rebounds. The Saints also received a strong shooting night from Conner McCane who chipped in with eleven points. Alex Davis paced the Wolves with 12 points.
The Saints will return to the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center on Saturday to host Marygrove (1-9, 1-4 WHAC) at 3 p.m.
