01/23/2013 – The women's basketball team was defeated by Concordia in WHAC action from the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center by the count of 79-61. The victory improved the Cardinals record to 17-4 on the season and to 14-1 in league play, while the Saints fell to 9-11 overall and to 5-9 in the WHAC. Aquinas remains in three-way tie for seventh place in the league standings.
A slow start stymied the Saints as Concordia scored the games first seven points. A quick three by Marissa Marx got the Saints on the scoreboard, but the Cardinals would eventually sprint out to a 20-8 advantage with 11:33 remaining to play in the first half. Sporting a double digit lead Concordia finish the half shooting 42%, while the Saints shot at a 27% clip during half number one. A 24-17 rebound advantage allowed the Cardinals to take a 38-22 lead into the locker room.
The tenth-ranked team in the land continued to apply pressure during the second half. The Saints would find themselves down by as many as 26 during the games final twenty minutes. The lone bright spot for Aquinas was the play of Elle Sturgell. The volleyball transplant accounted for 15 points, six rebounds and five blocks. Sturgell filled her stat line while only accumulating 17 minutes of playing time.
The Saints would close the game on a 13-5 run to bring the final score to a 79-61 verdict in favor of Cardinals. Hanah Sabol led all scorers with 19 points, while Abby Hengesbach scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds for Concordia.
Aquinas will now hit the road for a date with Indiana Tech (10-12, 8-6 WHAC) on Saturday.
