01/31/2013 – The men's basketball team opened the game on a 37-4 run and never looked back against the host Mustangs from Marygrove. The victory improved the Saints record to 9-8 in league play and to 11-14 overall, while the Mustangs fell to 3-22 on the season and to 3-14 in the WHAC. Aquinas has now positioned themselves in a three way tie for sixth in the league standings with just over two weeks to play.
The Saints, who were coming off a tough home loss to Lourdes, played inspired basketball during the games first twenty minutes to build a 37-7 lead at the intermission. Aquinas' defense stymied the Mustangs to 12% (3-25) shooting during the first half and keyed the Saints early explosion. The Saints also held a distinct advantage in the rebound department as Aquinas controlled the boards 28-11.
The two teams traded baskets for much of the second half with the Saints maintaining control of the contest. A late 13-0 surge by the Mustangs closed the gap to within 20, but too little too late as the Saints would prevail on the road 69-46.
Zach Eddy spearheaded the offensive attack as the senior led the Saints with 17 points. Austin Semple continued to play at a high level as he notched a double-double with eleven points and eleven rebounds. Coach Hammer also received quality minutes from Connor McCane who scored ten points and who was credited with five steals.
The Saints will return to the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center on Saturday with a date versus Northwestern Ohio (14-10, 10-7 WHAC) at 3 p.m.
