02/02/2013 – Another record falls as Emily Smith's effort in the shot put ranks her as the finest thrower in Aquinas history. Smith now holds both the indoor shot put and indoor weight throw records at Aquinas College. Smith's toss of 46-3.5 ranks her fourth nationally and was an 18 inch personal best.
Smith was not the only Saint to have success in the throwing circle as a pair of Saints from the men's team turned in outstanding performances. Joe Stachowicz bettered his provisional qualifying mark by recording a toss of 56-1.25 to rank him third all-time at Aquinas and ninth nationally.
Clay Weidenhamer is now ranked fourth all-time on the Aquinas list with a season best throw of 49-8.25. On the track the Saints were led by Grant Gunneson's victory in the 1000 meters. Gunneson's time of 2:32.00 (4th all-time) was a personal best and provisionally qualifies him for the National Championships.
Overall the Saints recorded 23 personal bests and were competitive in every event they were entered in. The team will return to action this weekend with a pair of meets. The majority of the team will compete at Calvin on Saturday, while a select group will travel to Grand Valley on Friday and Saturday.
