04/04/2013 – The baseball team opened the home portion of their schedule by splitting a pair of games with Cornerstone. The Saints are now perched at 9-2 in the WHAC and 16-6 overall, while the Golden Eagles post a 9-14 mark on the season and a 4-4 record in league play. Aquinas is currently in third place in the WHAC standings behind Madonna (1-0) and Indiana Tech (9-1).
After spotting the Golden Eagles four runs through the first seven innings the Saints bats finally woke up in the bottom half of the seventh. Aquinas struck for three runs closing the gap to 4-3. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Taylor Pawlanta, as the junior's two-run double inched the Saints closer to the Golden Eagles. The game-tying run was produced by an RBI single to right from Allen Manyan during the eighth. Both squads added a run in the ninth to force extra innings. Cornerstone only needed the tenth to secure the victory as a two run double in the top of the tenth by Zach Bohl secured the victory. Pawlanta and Manyen both collected two hits, while Tyler Cole (2-1) suffered the loss
as he gave up three earned runs and five hits in two innings of work.
The back half of the doubleheader was controlled by reigning WHAC Pitcher of the Week, Vince Misiewicz. Vince (4-1) was credited with a complete game and scattered seven hits during his seven innings of work. Misiewicz was charged with two unearned runs and he collected seven strikeouts. The Saints bats did just enough as they pushed across five runs on six hits. A two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth by Kyle Orlowski proved to be the game winner.
The Saints will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Rochester College (5-13) to play a twin bill with the Warriors.
