04/08/2013 – The women's softball team split a Sunday afternoon doubleheader with Siena Heights at Fuller Park. The Saints are now 15-12 on the season and 3-3 in the WHAC, while Siena Heights' record sits at 1-5 in the league and 12-14 overall.
The first game of the twinbill saw the Saints nursing a one run lead heading into the top of the seventh. Aquinas pitcher, Rebecca Shineldecker had kept Siena's offense under wraps for the first six innings. The seventh proved costly for the Saints as Siena's Taylor Hayes two run shot gave Coach Klutsarits' bunch the one run lead. An insurance run was added later in the inning by Siena. Aquinas could not recover from the ambush and was defeated by the score of 4-2. Shineldecker (3-8) was credited with the loss, while Lindsey Stewart and Sadie Stowell both recorded a pair of hits.
Coach Crystal Laska, who was now looking for the split, sent Carlie Giarmo to the mound to face the Saints from Siena. Giarmo pitched a gem scattering ten hits over seven innings. Siena managed to cross two runs across the plate and found themselves ahead 2-1 going into the bottom half of the fourth inning. Aquinas' bats perked up just enough to see the eventual game winning hit by Lindsey Stewart rocket out of the infield. Stewart's two run double scored Emily Corning and Ashley Milheim. Giarmo did the rest and closed the door on Siena to secure her eighth victory of the year.
Aquinas will return to action tonight as they travel to Holland to play Hope College in a doubleheader.
