04/09/2013 – The women's softball team traveled to Holland and picked up a pair of victories over the Flying Dutch. The Saints improved to 17-12 with the wins, while Hope fell to 12-10 on the season.
The Saints offense started quickly as Sadie Stowell and Torie Lowe both produced runs on base hits during the first inning. Hope stormed right back and knotted the game at two at the conclusion of the first. Aquinas regained the advantage in the fourth on a Emily Corning double that scored Olivia Platte. The Saints carried the one run lead into the bottom of the seventh where Hope scored the tying run, but stranded three. After the narrow escape, Aquinas exploded for five in the top half of the eighth to put the game on ice (almost). The Flying Dutch added two in the bottom half of the extra inning, but it was not enough as the Saints held on to win 8-5 in eight innings. Rebecca Shineldecker worked the final three innings to pick up her fourth victory of the season.
A Courtney Bishop home run in the second inning kick started the Saints offense in game number two. Aquinas added a second run in the inning on a RBI single by Lindsey Stewart. Hope battle back for a run in the bottom half of the second, but the door would close after that. Shineldecker (5-8) controlled the game from that point on as she allowed one hit over the final five innings. The Saints added three runs in the third and three more in the fifth to lead to a less dramatic 8-1 finish. The big blow coming on a three run bomb delivered by Jenn Woolard in the fifth.
The Saints will return to action on Saturday with a date in Sylvania, Ohio with Lourdes (4-15, 2-2 WHAC).
