05/03/2013 – The baseball team fell to the Crusaders of Madonna 13-5 to eliminate the Saints from the WHAC Tournament. Madonna advances to the championship game versus Indiana Tech, while Aquinas' season ends with a mark of 25-20.
The Saints advanced to the final three by eliminating host Davenport in the first game of the day. Kevin Schafer's pitching performance keyed the victory for Aquinas. Schafer pitched eight strong and improved his record to 5-2 on the season. Kevin allowed one run on three hits during his time on the mound.
After trading first inning runs the Saints struck for four runs in the fifth inning. A two-run double by Kyle Orlowski keyed the Saints attack. Michael Penny and Elliot Drain both were both credited with three hits a piece, while Tyler Cole picked up his seventh save of the season.
The Saints advanced to the brink of the championship game with only Madonna standing in their way. The two teams hooked up the day before with the Crusaders outlasting the Saints 5-4 in 11 innings.
The Crusaders jumped out early scoring six runs over the first two innings. An additional run added in the fifth left the Saints facing elimination in a 7-0 hole. Aquinas' bats woke up in the top half of the sixth as they erupted for five runs to close within two. A two run single through the left side by Steve Crawford keyed the comeback.
Madonna wasted little time in responding as they matched the Saints five runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Another fine hitting performance by Elliot Drain (2-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) would not be enough as the Crusaders prevailed 13-5.
