Saints Enjoy Successful Championship

05/04/2013 – School records, conference champions and national qualifies highlighted day two at the WHAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The men came home in second, while the women finished in third place. Both squads improved one placing from the indoor championships held in February.

Houseman Field in Grand Rapids was the setting for the 2013 Outdoor Championships. The team champion favorite, Indiana Tech, excelled in numerous events to claim the overall team title on both sides. Although the Saints did not win, they came away with many positives from the competition.

Aquinas claimed ten top-five performances, nine conference titles, five school records, seven automatic qualifiers and three provisional marks over the two day event. Earning WHAC titles were: Joe Stachowicz (Hammer), Emily Smith (Hammer), Blake Bitner (10,000 meters), Catie Rietsema (10,000 meters), Caleb Teachout (800 meters), Lindsey Karpowicz (Discus), Britta Patterson (5,000 meters), Jeff Cherry (5,000 meters) and Alvaro Romero (Triple Jump).

New Aquinas College records were established by Alicia Dorko (Pole Vault - 12-1.5), Adam Lohner (Pole Vault - 16-4.75), Alvaro Romero (Triple Jump - 47-8.5), Emily Smith (Hammer Throw - 172-6) and the men's 4x400 relay consisting of Ray Bordeaux, Eric Reed, Jason Parnell and Caleb Teachout (3:15.40). Other top-five performances were turned in by: Ryan Helminiak (#2 High Jump - 6-9), Emily Smith (#3 Javelin - 118-7), Lindsey Karpowicz (#4 Discus - 154-2), Rachel Bartels (#2 Hammer - 163-10) and Britta Patterson (#3 5000 Meters - 17:49.82).

The Saints also saw an influx of new or improved national qualifiers at the WHAC Championships. This automatic list included: the men's 4x400 meter relay, Ryan Helminiak (High Jump), Alicia Dorko (Pole Vault), Adam Lohner (Pole Vault), Alvaro Romero (Triple Jump), Lindsey Karpowicz (Discus) and Emily Smith (Hammer). Hitting new or improved "B" standards included: Joe Stachowicz (Hammer - 173-5), Rachel Bartels (Hammer) and Britta Patterson (5000 meters).

All in all a great day to be a Saint as the track and field team recorded one of the most productive days in school history. The team will return to action on Wednesday when they host the annual "Twilight Meet" at Houseman Field.
