09/01/2013 – A game winning goal by Matt Jackson with five ticks remaining on the clock elevated the Saints to a 2-1 victory over Bethel. The win improved the Saints record to 2-0, while the Pilots fell to 1-3 on the season.
Despite falling behind early the Saints showed great composure and were able to overcome and keep their perfect record in tact. A goal by Bethel's Zachary Drake in the 33rd minute gave the Pilots a one goal advantage heading into the halftime break.
Coach Veal's crew stuck to the game plan and continued to play Aquinas Soccer as their comeback mounted. A goal by Aldony Mendez, his second of the season, knotted the match at one early in the second half. The game seemed destined for overtime until a late flurry in front of the Bethel goal during the matches waning moments proved otherwise. After a few saves by the Bethel goalie, Aaron Hunter, a header by Matt Jackson from nine meters out found its way into the back of the net. A celebration, a yellow card and victory ensued for the Saints as they prevailed in their second contest of the season. Craig Demshuk was credited with the victory in net as he recorded five saves in his 90 minutes of work.
The Saints will look to keep their perfect record alive on Wednesday as they host St. Xavier (0-3) at 4 p.m.
