09/05/2013 – The women's soccer team extended their winning streak to three as they defeated the Pilots by the count of 2-1. The Saints improved to 3-0 on the season, while Bethel fell to 1-2-1 in the defeat.
The Saints trek through the Crossroads Conference continued to be successful as the squad shows great promise as they near conference play. The offensive attack was sparked early by Allison VanPatten, who struck for her second goal of the season during the eighth minute of play. Freshman Leeann Latsch provided the assist in the match's first score.
The Pilots evened the score in the 14th minute of play as Nicole Steller found the back of the net for the first time this season. Both teams continued to look for scoring opportunities, but both keepers kept the score knotted at one.
A corner kick off the foot of Mikayla Goldsmith, during the 65th minute, proved vital in the Saints victory. The kick was redirected by Elizabeth Vaughan right into the back of the net to give the Saints the one goal advantage. The corner kick conversion proved to be the game winner as the Saints maintained their lead over the match's final 25 minutes.
The Saints outshot Bethel 37-16 (20-8 on goal) and held a distinct advantage in corners (14-1). Lindsay Armstrong was credited with the victory in net for the Saints as she stopped seven of eight shots on goal. Mallory Conrad, the Bethel keeper, played strong in defeat as she recorded 18 saves.
The Saints will return to the pitch on Saturday with a home date with the Trojans of Taylor University (4-1). The ball will drop at 2 p.m. at the AQ Athletic Field.
