09/15/2013 – The men's cross country team finished second out of 27 squads at the annual season opener at the Calvin Knight Invitational. The meet is hosted by Calvin College at the Gainey Athletic Complex in Grand Rapids.
The Saints, who are ranked third nationally, outdistanced themselves from all opponents except the defending NAIA National Champions, St. Francis of Illinois (currently ranked #1 in the nation). Grant Gunneson led a contingent of seven Saints across the finish in under twenty-six minutes as the junior from Rockford placed sixth in a time of 25:14. Following Gunneson across the line was Zach Stepanovich (18th - 25:41), Jacob Towne (20th - 25:42) and Brendan Molony (22nd - 25:43). The duo of Jeff Cherry and Steve Glinski finished in unison as they completed the 8000 meter course in 25:53, 31st and 32nd place respectively. Rounding out the varsity seven was Dan Foley whose 25:58 placed him 38th.
The Saints, who tallied 74 points, finished 32 points behind team champion St. Francis and 68 points ahead of host and third place Calvin College.
The Saints will return to action on Friday when they compete at the National Catholic Championships hosted by the University of Notre Dame
