10/31/2010 – The men's soccer team defeated Davenport in overtime to claim the WHAC regular season soccer title. The Saints also staked claim to the number one seed in the upcoming WHAC tournament and will receive a first round bye. The Saints closed the regular season with a 14-4 record overall and a 5-1 record in the WHAC. Davenport fell to 5-1 in the WHAC and finished the regular season with a 12-6 record.
Aquinas built an early lead in the first half as Jeovani Pantoja recorded his 13th goal of the season on a header off a corner kick by Michael Gagnon in the 14th minute. The lead increased to 2-0 as the Panthers added an own goal later in the half. The Saints added to their advantage early in the second half as Pantoja scored an unassisted goal in the 47th minute.
Trailing by three goals the Panthers mounted their comeback. Goals by Chase Burgess and Carl Winterbottom in the 53rd and 67th minute brought Davenport within one goal. In the 74th minute Michael Ricketts completed the comeback on a header off a kick from the keeper. Regulation came to a close and more time was needed to decide the WHAC champion.
Five minutes into the extra stanza, Jeovani Pantoja completed the hat trick as he lofted a shot over the Panthers keeper to secure the victory and championship.
The Saints will now await the winner of the Siena Heights/Madonna game, which will be contested on Saturday. Aquinas will host the winner of that game on Tuesday, November 9th.
