10/02/2013 – The women's volleyball team was defeated in a road contest held on the campus of Cornerstone University. The victory improved Cornerstone's record to 11-9 overall and to 3-1 in the WHAC, while the Saints fell to 7-5 on the season and to 2-3 in league play. Aquinas currently sits in seventh place in the WHAC standings.
The Golden Eagles, who were receiving votes in the latest NAIA coaches poll, have now rattled off nine victories in their last eleven matches. The first set saw Cornerstone strike for a .400 team attack percentage. The precision hitting gave the host a 25-12 set one victory.
The Saints refused to role over and played inspired volleyball during set number two. The play of Molly Maynard, Michaela Ryan and Brooke Wieland gave the Saints the opportunity to steal a set. Aquinas pushed the Golden Eagles to the limit only to fall late in the set 26-24. Cornerstone proceeded to claim victory in set three (25-17) and the match.
The Saints were led offensively by Maynard who collected nine kills. Brooke Wieland added 19 assists and eleven digs for Aquinas.
The Saints will return to the floor on Friday when they travel to Sylvania, Ohio to battle Lourdes (10-7, 1-3 WHAC). The match will be contested at Southview High School.
