Season Outlook |
2009 was a year of warm weather and hot bats for the Saints softball team. Only being shut out one time for an entire season is a testament to how hard the ladies played and the skill level the entire team possesses. A season of highs and lows resulted with the team posting a 39-14 (.730) record and a second place (22-6) regular season finish in the WHAC. After starting the season 10-6 the girls had work to do in order to keep up the respectable records of years past. The heart of the season is where the Saints did the most damage, winning 23 of 25 games with many conference games included. Pitching, defense, and offense are three key elements in being successful on the diamond and these ladies certainly excelled at all three.

Junior Alyssa Fleser and sophomore Whitney Hudson toed the rubber for Aquinas and performed at a level imperative to be at for the team to have the success they had. The two stars combined for a 3.06 ERA while recording 39 wins, Fleser with 19 and Hudson with 20. With experience under their belt as both started as freshman, the two knew when to step up their game when it was most needed. An astonishing 2.33 conference ERA and 5 shutouts helped the Saints to a respectable second place finish in WHAC conference.

Leadership and power fueled the Saints offense with the seniors hitting 29 of the teams 38 homeruns with an amazing .372 batting average for the group. Senior Ashley Aspinall led the way with a .455 batting average and second on the team in homeruns (8) behind senior Jacki Plough with 11. The two were voted to the NAIA All American second team. Senior Careena Demull was third on the team in HR (7), RBI (35), and Doubles (13). Freshman speedster Logan Marsh led the way for the Saints in triples (5) as well as stolen bases (11).

Aspinall, Plough, Cirina Jones, and Courtney Miles were all recognized as All WHAC performers while Aspinall was voted player of the year. Pitcher Whitney Hudson was voted second team All WHAC. Aspinall and Junior Sam Kendall, were voted to the WHAC All Academic team. Senior Kristi Labinski was also voted to the WHAC All Academic team as well as being an NAIA Academic All American.
