Good Security Practices for Windows

By following some simple steps you can go a long ways towards securing your computer. Listed below are a few of the more important action items you should take in regards to securing your computer.

Install Virus Protection

  • Up-to-date antivirus software is required for AQnet use.
  • If you do not have an antivirus package, there are several free programs available such as AVG, AntiVir, and Avast!.  Other programs that we support are F-prot, F-secure, Kaspersky, Kaspersky-Internet Security, McAfee, Norton/Symantec, Panda, Sophos, Computer Associates, Webroot-AntiVirus, Webroot-SpySweeper and Trend Micro.

Run Windows Update

  • Current critical Windows updates are required for AQnet use.
  • Running Windows Update is perhaps the most important step you can take in keeping your computer safe.
Windows XP/2000:  An update can be performed at any time by clicking Windows Update on the top of your Start Menu, or by visiting http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Windows Vista: To view and install available updates, click Start, All Programs, and Windows Updates. Click on Check for updates and install "Critical Updates" as quickly as possible.
  • Consider setting up automatic Windows Updates.
Windows XP: Click Start, Control Panel, System. (You may need to switch the control panel to the "Classic View" option to see the System icon first.) Under System, there will be an Automatic Updates tab where you can decide how often the Automatic Updater should check and how it should behave when it finds a new update.
Windows 2000 users can set up an automatic updating schedule as well by downloading the auto-updater add-on, which can be found on the Windows Update site.
Windows Vista: Click Start, All Programs, Windows Update.  In the left pane, click Change settings.  Select Install updates automatically (recommended). Under Recommended updates, select the “Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about updates” check box. Click OK.

Use Good Passwords

  • Choosing good passwords is an important step in keeping your computer safe. A good password will have a combination of upper and lower case letters, and perhaps even numbers or symbols.  Click here for important password guideline’s for creating a safe password.
  Prevent Spyware

  • Spyware (a.k.a. adware) is any software that covertly gathers user information through your Internet connection without your knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Spyware applications are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the Internet. Once installed, the spyware monitors your activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses, passwords, and credit card numbers.
  • There are several programs that can be used to protect your computer against spyware, pop-ups, and slow performance, such as Ad-Aware, Windows Defender, and Spybot S&D, as well as other applications.

If you are running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Mac OS X, it is also recommended that you turn on the built-in firewall for added protection from viruses and other malicious software.
