| News and Updates |
With the completion of the campus wireless plan, Aquinas is transitioning residential Internet access to a more secure, all wireless environment.
Below are some tips to optimize your wireless experience:
- Beginning in fall 2011, a new registration system will be in place for AQnet. This new system features enhanced wireless security. Upon returning to campus, students will need to re-register their devices to access AQnet.
- For devices that require a wired network port, students will need to purchase a wireless adapter before they will be able to connect their device to AQnet. To connect devices that cannot use a wireless adapter, you will need to request a wired port. Click on the AQnet Support Wizard icon below to initiate the request process. Please sure to include information about the type of the device that requires a wired port. Please note: A $25 Wired Service Activation Fee will be charged to your student account after the port is installed. You will need to provide a network cable to connect your device.
We invite you to look around our frequently asked questions page for more detailed information on AQnet and how to configure your computer for use on AQnet.

| Good Security Practices for Windows |
By following some simple steps you can go a long ways towards securing your computer. Listed below are a few of the more important action items you should take in regards to securing your computer. |
| |
Install Virus Protection |
| |
- Up-to-date antivirus software is required for AQnet use.
- If you do not have an antivirus package, ITS recommends the freely available
Microsoft Security Essentials.
|
Run Windows Update |
| |
- For unrestricted access to AQnet, PC users will have to ensure that Automatic Updates are enabled.
- Individual security
updates are not checked for, though it is best-practice to download them when marked as Critical or Important. It is also
recommended that Mac users stay up-to-date with important operating system updates.
- Running Windows Update is perhaps the most important step you can take in keeping your computer safe.
An update can be performed at any time by visiting http://update.microsoft.com or the computer's Control Panel. See your Windows documentation for more information.
|
Use Strong Passwords |
| |
- Choosing strong passwords is an important step in keeping your computer safe. A strong password will have a combination of upper and lower case letters, and numbers or symbols. Read our important password guidelines for creating a safe password.
|
| Prevent Malware |
| |
- Malware (a.k.a. adware) is any software that covertly gains access to your computer via an Internet connection without your knowledge. Malware applications can be bundled as a hidden component of freeware/shareware programs, or installed silently from unsecure or compromised web sites. Malware will attempt to disrupt your Windows environment by displaying ads, installing viruses, or attempting to steal personal information (i.e. credit card data, or other sensitive material).
- Today's antivirus software tools are designed to combat most forms of malware.
- It is also recommended that you turn on the built-in firewall that is included in your operating system for added protection against malicious software.
