AQnet (formerly known as ResNet)

AQnet is Aquinas College's residential networking service that provides high-speed Internet access from the convenience of your room and other on-campus locations. To register, simply plug your computer into any available AQnet port, turn it on, launch your browser, and follow the on-screen instructions.  Most new computers will work with AQnet out-of-the-box, but some may require configuration.  We invite you to look around this page for more detailed information on AQnet, how to configure your computer for use on AQnet, and to view answers to your most frequently asked questions.

Click here to download a PDF of the AQnet welcome guide with instructions on setting up your computer and getting connected.

To use your computer on AQnet you need to have a network card. If you already have a network card installed, proceed to the section on configuring your operating system. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a 10/100 Fast Ethernet card from an electronics retailer. You may choose to install it yourself or have a retailer or service technician install it for you.

Operating System Configuration

Aquinas provides documentation to help you configure various operating systems on AQnet. RTAs (Resident Technology Assistants) are only trained in dealing with Windows machines. Other operating systems are permitted, but are treated with a "best-effort" frame of mind - meaning that we cannot provide in-depth assistance. Please select the your computer's operating system from the list below for configuration instructions for AQnet:

If you are not running any of the operating systems listed below, click here for generic instructions on configuring your operating system.

Windows Vista Windows XP/2000 Windows 95/98/Me Windows NT Mac OS X Linux

Application Configuration
As of fall 2004, configuration for most applications is no longer necessary for use on AQnet.  All browsers, instant messaging programs, media applications, and music store programs should work out-of-the-box with no proxy configuration. Please note that Aquinas does not fully support the use of instant messaging programs on AQnet. Aquinas recommends the iTunes Music Store for use on AQnet.  You may download a copy for free from itunes.com.

AntiVirus and Security Applications
AntiVirus software is required for AQnet use.  To download the latest virus definitions and product updates for your software, you must first configure the program.  Aquinas has provided instructions for configuring Norton AntiVirus to download updates automatically.  If you do not have an antivirus package, there are several free programs available such as AVG, AntiVir , and Avast!

Aquinas recommends Ad-Aware, a free program that scans your computer for malicious software. Click here for more information and for setup instructions.

If you are running Windows XP or Mac OS X, it is also recommended that you turn on the built-in firewall for added protection from viruses and other malicious software.

Email Clients

The ability to send mail using an your Aquinas email account with your own email client is now available on AQnet. Complete instructions for email clients are available in your Aquinas Email Powered by Google by clicking on the Help section and then clicking on POP Access.

You can also send mail using an external email account with your own email client using SMTP. Aquinas has provided instructions for configuring Mail (Mac OS X) and Thunderbird (available free for Windows and Mac) as well as generic instructions for other email clients.
