The Aquinas Student of the Month is chosen by a committee of faculty overseen by the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and is given out in September, October, November, February, March and April. The award is based upon a student's academic record, research and leadership during the previous month at Aquinas College. >Nomination Form

April 2014
Alexis Worthington Alexis Worthington, who graduated from Aquinas on May 10, has been chosen as our April Student of the Month. Alexis is a member of the Insignis Honors Program as well as the LIT the honors society for English majors. In April she presented a paper at the GR Area Intercollegiate Honors Conference, a conference she helped to organize. She is a member of the AQ dance team and she serves as the President of the Gender Studies Club. She does this all while holding down several jobs including working writing consultant and as a student assistant to the I&E program.
March 2014
Corey Giffel is the Student of the Month for March 2014. Corey started at Aquinas in the fall of 2013 and has already emerged as an exceptional leader inside and outside of the classroom. His work ethic and strive to better the community has been referred to as “unparalleled.” Corey is majoring in Business Administration and a member of the hockey team. In his extra time he works at a soup kitchen and has helped to build an ice rink at Wilcox Park.

Michael Weber


Michael Weber has been chosen as the Student of the Month for February. He is sophomore majoring in Business Administration/Sports Management with dual majors in Communication and an emphasis in Marketing.  Michael has been on the Dean’s List.  He is on the men’s soccer team and interning both at College Prep Soccer and Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame. Michael finds time to volunteer at Goodwill.

Michael Gagnon


Aquinas College senior Michael Gagnon has been selected as the Student of the Month for November. Michael is the captain of the men’s soccer team and helps with fundraising and promotional posters for the team. He has been on the Dean’s List six times since he started in the fall of 2010. He is majoring in both International Business and Math. Michael also volunteers for both Junior Achievement and the Mike Herman Memorial Soccer Camp. Michael started College Prep Soccer, LLC in 2012, a soccer camp that helps high school soccer players achieve their goal of playing college soccer.

Aquinas College senior Emily McAfee has been selected as the Student of the Month for October. She was recently named the Habitat Volunteer of the Month and is the president of the Habitat for Humanity Club on campus.
Emily is an outstanding student who finds time to serve others.  Recently, Emily was inducted into the German Honor Society.  Emily is a wonderful example of how the charisms of Aquinas College are being lived by its students.

Jared King


Aquinas College senior Jared King has been selected as the Student of the Month for September. Jared is a math major and an active member of the Math Club. Jared has been on the Dean’s List for five semesters. Jared was an Orientation Leader and is on the Student Senate Commuter Committee. He is actively involved as a commuter student and is a role model as a successful and involved commuter student. Jared also finds time in his schedule to help at Sunday School at St. Mary’s Church.

Brandon Heritier

Aquinas College junior Brandon Heritier has been selected as the Student of the Month for April. Brandon is a political science and math major with a minor in Spanish. Brandon servers as the Chair of the Student Senate and has been reelected for next year.  He is also the President of the Prelaw Club.  Brandon was on the Dean’s list for both fall 2011 and spring 2012. Earlier in the year, Brandon was selected as one of only 25 American students to travel to Israel as part of CARAVAN for Democracy sponsored by the Jewish National Fund.

Madeline Provenzano

Sophomore Madeline Provenzano has been named Student of the Month for March 2013. Madeline maintains a 3.6 grade point average majoring in biology and minoring in both chemistry and theology.  She is a Resident Assistant on campus and has also volunteered last semester at the Helen DeVos Children’s hospital.  She is a member of AED and ACS.  Madeline participated in an Aquinas service-learning trip over spring break to New Orleans. Madeline is a woman who never stops trying to find a way to improve the lives of others.

Erin Lilly

Erin Lilly has been chosen as the February student of the month. Erin is a senior majoring in English and has been on the Dean’s List four times during the course of her academic career at Aquinas. Erin is an active member of VIBE (Voices Inspiring Black Students Everywhere). Erin also actively gives back to her community by tutoring, donating blood, as well as volunteering at Catholic Thrift Store, Helping Hands and Heartside Pride. Erin had a 3.926 grade point average last semester and carries a 3.58 cumulative grade point average. She is known as a tireless worker that is warm and welcoming to all.

Carlie Giarmo

Serving as the Vice President of the Student Athlete Advisor Board is just one of many leadership roles that senior Pre-Law major Carlie Giarmo plays at Aquinas College. The senior pitcher from Monroe St. Mary’s has been successful both on the softball diamond where she has a few no-hitters to her credit as well as in the community. Carlie has been applauded for her wonderful speech at the scholarship reception as well as at the Athletic Success Summit.  She organized the athletic Red Cross blood drive where Aquinas collected over 40 pints of blood (the largest school event so far this year).  She has also coordinated the adoption of three families for Thanksgiving and is working on adopting families for Christmas through Catholic Social Services.  In the classroom, Carlie consistently stays above a B average despite all of her outside involvement.  For her spirit of service and giving back in the spirit of the holidays, we have chosen Ms. Carlie Giarmo as the November student of the month.

October 2012

Senior Communications scholar Courtney DeSpelder has been named the Student of the Month for October 2012. Courtney has made the Dean’s list each of the past three semesters at Aquinas College and maintains a 3.445 cumulative grade point average. Courtney is a very well rounded student.  In addition to her work inside the classroom, she is the president of the Aquinas College Programming Board where she has recruited, retained and facilitated 50 eager student programmers. She helps her executive board manage the largest run registered student organization on campus and has worked tirelessly on creating our vibrant, diverse, seven-day campus. Courtney has also has been involved in other clubs and organizations including SAC. Her responsibilities on and off campus are many as she finishes her degree in communication and her internship with the Friends of Grand Rapids Parks. Courtney also volunteers as a makeup artist for the Greenville Area Community Center and the Greenville High School.

Kathryn Borst Sophomore Kathryn Borst has been named Student of the Month for September of 2012. Kay is an outstanding student leader on our campus. Kay maintains a 3.7 grade point average as a dual business administration and communication major. Kay can also be seen serving Aquinas in a variety of ways. Kay is an active Resident Advisor in St. Joseph Hall, a student-worker in the Career and Counseling Center, as well as the Campus Traditions Chair of the Aquinas College Programming Board. In this role, Kay she planned the entire student portion of Homecoming. She is known throughout the entire Aquinas community as a friendly face that has great attention to detail, her follow through and her ability to make things happen.

Megan Ternes

Junior mathematics and German major Megan Ternes has been named Student of the Month for April 2012.  Megan’s research article, “Tangent Circles in the Hyperbolic Disk” has recently been accepted for publication in the Rose-Hulman Math Journal.  Additionally her project in math/modern cryptography, an independent study, combines ideas from hash functions, Braid’s Linear Algebra and number theory with enough content to fill another article which she has begun entitled, “When Life Gives You Hash, Make Lemonade.”  Megan presented at the Aquinas College Research Symposium on April 25, 2012 and also has presented at the Van Andel Institute.  She has also been a Mohler-Thompson researcher during her tenure at Aquinas College.  Megan carries a 3.769 grade point average.

Ariel Timm

Aquinas College senior Ariel Timm has been selected as the Student of the Month for March of 2012. Ariel will be graduating cum laude in May with a Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Business and Community Leadership. Ariel spent two years on the lacrosse team, a semester interning in Chicago and a semester abroad in Ireland. Ariel is also recognized for being extremely helpful and courteous.  She has worked as an ambassador for three years and worked to promote an encouraging and happy community both at AQ and in Grand Rapids. She strives to be an optimistic and positive person and her love for Aquinas shines bright.

Bernadette Poirier

Bernadette Poirier has been a model of balancing scholarship and leadership.  She has been an amazing presence on campus. She is a biology and art dual major with a 3.85 cumulative grade point average.  Bernadette is the President of the Catholic Life Club, a student advisor for the Areate Biking Retreat, an Insignis scholar. Last summer, she participated in a research project with the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute as an U.R.G.E. student researcher studying ants in particular. In this past month, in addition to excelling in her academics, she has been meeting with Professor Eberle to help plan the 125th anniversary study events including a student talk back panel and discussion.

Kathryn Reach

We are pleased to announce Kathryn Reach as the November 2011 Student of the Month. Kathryn is a Community Leadership major, who transferred to Aquinas from George Mason University. Kathryn is an excellent student who has volunteered in the Appalachia Service Project in Tennessee for each of the past three summers. This past summer she led a team of volunteer coordinators (who coordinate volunteers rehabbing houses of low-income residents).  She showed remarkable skills in her leadership. Additionally, Kathryn has worked with Home Repair Services of Grand Rapids, a nonprofit helping Grand Rapids low-income homeowners.  In addition to her academic studies at Aquinas, Kathryn would also like to get a contractor’s license to better serve the community.

Erin Murphy

Erin Murphy has been named student of the month for October 2011. Erin has demonstrated outstanding leadership as a Student Assistant in the Residence Life Office over the past year. More recently, she provided consistent support throughout the summer and was a constant presence during August training, opening, orientation and the start of the school year. Erin can be trusted to work independently, regularly takes initiative, and is unafraid to tackle any task delegated to her. She goes above the beyond the call of duty to help the department in any way she can.  Her leadership and service have been appreciated immensely by the Residence Life Office and by the many other departments she has worked with on campus. Erin recently participated in the Day on the Job program and is considering a career in student affairs/higher education.

Monica Rischiotto

Monica Rischiotto has been named student of the month for September 2011. Monica is an English major with a 3.59 grade point average. In addition to her outstanding scholarship, Monica has been providing great leadership as a member of the 125th Anniversary Executive Team, Student Senate, and in Residence Life as a Resident Assistant.  Monica is also a valuable member of the women’s soccer team.  Monica is active, committed, multi-talented and her enthusiasm for Aquinas is contagious.


2010-2011 Academic Year

March 2011

Andrew Borgman, a senior from Alma, Mich. is our March 2011 student of the month. Andrew is majoring in mathematics and has established a 3.982 cumulative G.P.A.  Andrew has been very involved in co-curricular activities.  In addition to serving as the President of the Math Club, and managing the front desk at St. Joe’s, Andrew also excels as a math tutor. Always a person that can be counted on to help, Andrew recently volunteered to drive a fellow student who was to present a paper at Rose-Hulman’s Math Conference in Terre Haute, Ind. Andrew also arranged, with The New Tech Club, a pair of talks with a professor from the Naval Academy.  In addition, Andrew passed his second actuarial exam at the end of February. Congratulations, Andrew!

February 2011

We are very pleased to announce that Joanne VanderHyde is AQ's student of the month for February 2011.  Joanne recently completed a major renovation and redecoration of the lounge in Albertus Hall.  She coordinated over 30 students from the Aquinas Chemistry Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta, Tri-Beta, The Student Nursing Association and the Math Club to participate in this major project.  Not only did she gather and supervise a crew of workers she also obtained the paint, furniture and art to complete the job.  This was a huge and successful undertaking.  Joanne is a senior majoring in Biology with a Chemistry minor. She is also the President of the AQ Chemistry Society, Vice President of AED and a Member of Tri-Beta.

November 2010

Our November student of the Month is Nate Poirier. Nate is a senior at Aquinas College and a four year member of the Cross Country Team. He is a true student-athlete, maintaining a 3.6 cumulative GPA while dual majoring in Math and Physics.  Nate recently was commended for his presentation at the Michigan Undergraduate Math Conference.  Additionally, Nate submitted a paper titled "The Hyperbolic Version of Alhazen's Billiard Problem" to Involve. Nate also finds the time to give back to the community, as he acts as tutor for the Math Department every Thursday night.

Lisa Hinkel, a junior, majoring in Community Leadership has been named of Student of the Month for October 2010.  Lisa is a continuing education student coming back to college after having two children. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA since returning to her studies at Aquinas. When not in class or raising a family, Lisa is an elected member of the Grand Rapids Public Schools and is a volunteer with Kids Food Basket. She is a great credit to Aquinas College for her diligence and spirit of service to the community. 
September 2010
We are proud to name Christy Armock as the Student of the Month for September 2010.  She is a senior majoring in English and Spanish while maintaining a 3.95 overall GPA and is also very involved in campus life. Christy works in the Registrar and Advising Center where she has been described as dependable and indispensable.  She serves on the front line helping everyone who comes into the office and everyone who works in the office. Her vast array of duties include fielding phone calls with knowledgeable finesse, preparing for STAR sessions, updating student records, verifying degrees and many other major projects.
