Tim Bennett is currently Faculty Director of
the Master
in Science Education Program, is an
Associate Professor of Education at Aquinas College.
He currently teaches EN 209/509 Foundations of Education, EN 466/566 Classroom Management, EN 301 Introduction to Assessing Student Learning, EN406/506 Application of Learning Theories
for the Elementary Classroom, and EN561 Assessing Student Learning
classes as well as courses in the Master in Science Education
Program. Tim is also the Faculty Advisor for the Student
Chapter of ASCD (Association of Supervision and Curriculum
Development) and Director of the Aquinas College Summer Science
Camp for 4th through 6th graders. Tim earned a Bachelor of Science
degree in Biology and a Master in the Art of Classroom Teaching
from Michigan State University as well as a Master of Arts degree
in Elementary Education from Grand Valley State University.
He joined the faculty in the fall semester of 1998 upon his
retirement from Wyoming Public Schools after 30 years of distinguished
service. When he is not involved in teaching, Tim can be found fishing on his bass
boat, making music with his friends, creating something in his
studio or enjoying the outdoors.
Publications
Collaborating with Dr. Carol Winkle on a proposal to a major textbook publisher for a new book about an interactive approach to the development and implementation of educational philosophies.
Published an article on “Why Pre-Service Teacher Candidates Need To Be Members of Michigan ASCD” in the fall 2007 issue of quarterly newsletter, The Report, for Michigan ASCD.
Research
Researched, designed and proposed a program for alternative routes to certification for the School of Education.
Researched and presented results to the Graduate Leadership Council on criteria and credentialing of master teachers in other states.
Researched constructivist science methodologies and analyzed standardized and non-standardized assessment data as a consultant for the East Grand Rapids School District. Did similar work related to the middle and high school math program for the Northview Public School system.
Currently researching on retention of teachers in the profession during the first 3-5 years of service as Dr. Carol Winkle and I develop and implement the STAY Program for the School of Education in an attempt to support our graduates in the first few years of their teaching careers.
Researched and facilitated the development of a portfolio assessment program at Kent Transitions Center (2008/2009 school year) and currently assisting in the first year of implementation (2009/2010).
Researched and facilitating in the 2009/2010 school year the construction and use of valid assessments for the K-12 schools in the Catholic Diocese to use for data collection, analysis, and data informed decisions.
Presentations
Present twice a year at the Fire-Up! conference sponsored by ITEC-WM. The presentation deals with the use of the class meeting format to facilitate student's collaborative problem solving skills in the area of interpersonal difficulties between students. Frequently asked to make this presentation to individual school staffs in the area.
Presented at Grand Rapids Community College in November of this year on the topic of e-portfolios and portfolio assessment in general.
Presented a workshop February 5, 2008 in Macomb County ISD for the Michigan ASCD Practitioners Classroom Assessment Conference on designing and implementing portfolio assessment.
Presented at the Michigan Science Teacher’s Association conference on constructivist approaches to science education and using myths in science to teach accurate content.
