MAT Endorsement and Concentration Areas

Elementary Education Endorsement (Graduate)

This program is designed to add an elementary education endorsement to a secondary teacher's Michigan certification. (For information on M.A.T. program options available to certified elementary teachers, see M.A.T. Elementary Education Concentration.)

 

The secondary teacher desiring to add an elementary endorsement (without the M.A.T. degree) to a teaching certificate will complete a minimum of 21 credit hours in the elementary area (courses with asterisk *) plus earn a passing score on the state Elementary Education test). A practicum requirement is dependent upon the teaching experience of the candidate. The M.A.T. degree with an Elementary Endorsement requires a minimum of 36 credit hours.
 
Foundational Core Courses: 15 credit hours
EN 544 Language Acquisition and Teaching (3 credit hours)
EN 561 Assessing Student Learning (3 credit hours)
EN 596 School and Culture in the 21st Century (3 credit hours)
EN 510 Research Methods, Design and Analysis (3 credit hours);  2nd to last class
EN 690 Master Teaching Project (3 credit hours); Last class
 
Reading Required For Elementary Endorsement: 6 credit hours
EN 520 Literacy I Required by State if not previously taken (3 credit hours)
EN 541 Literacy II (3 credit hours); Prerequisite: EN 520 or equivalent *
EN 610 Inquiry-Based Literacy and Differentiated Instruction (3 credit hours) *

NOTE: EN 610 should be taken as part of the first 18 hours of this planned program in order to qualify for Professional Certification

 
Mathematics Required For Elementary Endorsement: 6 credit hours
ED 560 Mathematics for Elementary and Middle School Teachers I (3 credit hours) *; Prereq: Algebra Proficiency
ED 561 Mathematics for Elementary and Middle School Teachers II (3 credit hours) *; Prereq: ED 560
 
Practicum Requirement
EN 599 Practicum: Elementary (3 credit hours) *

Dependent on teaching experience (3+ years) of candidate

*EN 520, EN 541, ED 560 and ED 561 MUST be completed prior to Practicum.
