Certification & Program Updates
Any changes or updates to the State of Michigan certification requirements or the School of Education program requirements since the publication of the School of Education Handbook (PDF), will be noted here. (Updates will be listed in order from the most recent to the oldest.)

Psychology and Sociology
The School of Education is no longer accepting candidates for certification in Psychology and Sociology (Update posted January 2008).
 
Visual Arts Education (LQ endorsement)
The Visual Arts Education endorsement is now available for students pursuing secondary certification only. For further information regarding specific requirements, students should contact the Art Department at (616) 632-2413. (Update posted on February 21, 2006.)
 
Health, Physical Education and Recreation major or minor (MX endorsement):

New candidates may not be accepted for this endorsement after summer semester 2005. Teacher candidates currently in the Health, PE & Recreation (MX) program, or beginning the MX program before the close of summer semester of 2005, must complete the MX program before the close of the summer semester of 2009. All education requirements, including Directed Student Teaching, must be successfully completed by the spring semester of 2009. The final Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) for the Health, Physical Education and Recreation will be offered during July of 2010.

Due to the short notice given us by the Michigan Department of Education, it is imperative that students currently pursuing this endorsement make an appointment immediately with an Education Advisor in the School of Education. Contact the Aquinas College School of Education office (ext. 2800) or the Health, PE & Recreation Department (ext. 2898) for information regarding a new program alternative to this endorsement. (Update posted on October 10, 2005.)

 
CPR Certification:

All candidates seeking initial certification after July 1, 2004, must show proof of current CPR certification provided by either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association. The training must include basic First Aid; adult CPR; and child CPR. Please call the Certification Officer at (616) 632-2436 with any questions regarding the CPR requirement.

 
Accounting (minor for elementary; major or minor for secondary candidates):
New candidates may not be accepted after fall semester 2004. Candidates must complete the academic requirements by June 2008; MTTC subject area test in Accounting must be passed and certification completed by July 2009. This endorsement is to be replaced by "Business Management, Marketing and Technology" (currently unavailable through Aquinas College ).
 
Art Education (major or minor for elementary and secondary candidates):
New candidates may not be accepted into programs after the fall semester of the 2002-2003 academic year. Current candidates must complete programs by June of 2006; MTTC subject area test in Art Education must be passed and certification completed by July of 2007. This endorsement to be replaced by Visual Arts Education.
 
Biology:
State changes pending for the biology major and minor for elementary candidates. Elementary candidates wishing to become certified in science should contact the School of Education for more information.
 
Business Administration (minor for elementary; major or minor for secondary candidates):
New candidates may not be accepted after fall semester 2004. Candidates must complete the academic requirements by June 2008; MTTC subject area test in Business Administration must be passed and certification completed by July 2009. This endorsement is limited to teaching the subject of "Business Administration" only. It is to be replaced by " Business Management, Marketing and Technology" (currently unavailable through Aquinas College ).
 
Early Childhood Education:
Changes pending. Notification from Michigan Department of Education anticipated after July, 2004.
 
English As a Second Language (ESL) Minor:
Minor requirements are changing to 27 credits. The changes will affect all new ESL minors declared after the spring semester of 2004. Please contact an education advisor in the School of Education for further information.
 
Foreign Languages:
Changes pending. Notification from Michigan Department of Education anticipated after July, 2004.
 
General Science (for elementary candidates):
New candidates may not be accepted into programs after the fall semester of the 2003-2004 academic year. Current candidates must complete programs by June of 2007; MTTC subject area tests must be passed and certification completed by July of 2008. This endorsement to be replaced by Integrated Science.
 
Health, Physical Education and Recreation:
Changes pending.
 
Learning Disabilities K-12:
Major requirements are changing. The changes will affect all new LD majors declared after the spring semester of 2004. Please contact an education advisor in the School of Education for further information.
 
Music Education:

JX) (Major or minor for elementary of secondary education) This endorsement may not be offered to new candidates after the fall semester of the 2006-2007 academic year. Candidates must complete program by June of 2010; MTTC subject area test in Music Education must be passed and certification completed by July of 2011. Changes for the new Music Education (JQ) endorsement are pending. Students interested in becoming certified to teach music should keep in contact with their advisor in the Music Department.
