About the Spain Program

Aquinas College's Spain Program is located northwest of Madrid, in the city of Salamanca. Each fall semester 10-15 students participate in this intensive Spanish cultural immersion program.

To achieve the cultural immersion objective we have designed the academics, excursions, and housing to interrelate and intensify the immersion experience.

Aquinas College now offers study abroad options for fall and spring semesters in two different Spanish-speaking countries: Costa Rica and Spain. Both of these programs are designed to accommodate

a full range of language levels so that participants can earn a variety of credits toward the Spanish major or minor while gaining an intensive cultural immersion experience.
 
Academics
Courses for this program are taught by instructors at Cursos Internacionales at the University of Salamanca. All students are required to take Spanish Conversation, Spanish Grammar and Spanish Culture. This program has a regional focus and includes excursions to local and regional sites and cities to augment the curriculum.
 
Elective courses include:
  • Spanish Literature
  • Spanish Art History
  • Spanish Composition
  • Business Spanish
 
Advanced students have the option of attending a selected course, in consultation with the resident directors, at the University of Salamanca. Under certain conditions, students with special needs in their majors may study independently. Arrangements should be made with the resident faculty directors and the major advisor. The arrangements must conform to the standards set for independent study on campus.
 
Excursions

A series of excursions designed to augment the program’s curriculum will take students to various cities and cultural sites both locally and regionally. In the past years students have traveled to Granada, Seville, Madrid, Ronda, Cordoba, and Toledo.

In addition, participants will be able to construct their own experience through independent travel.

Housing
The Spain program offers students the opportunity to stay with native salamantina families. This setting provides the opportunity to build friendships and gain insight into daily living, as well as an immediate local resource for the individual students. Also, integration into the daily workings of the home represents regular and practical language application and insight into cultural values and behaviors.
