I hear music! Let’s dance!
Okay, so it’s May, and I only have one thing on my mind… HOCKEY! (and ice fights, hence the dancing!)
Yes, boys and girls, it’s time to drop the gloves and sticks and sit down for the NHL playoffs, as well as the series of games that separate the boys from the men, the battle for the Holy Grail itself, The Stanley Cup! Sure, it has been built upon over the years, but the cup still remains the ultimate goal for every forward, goalie, and defenseman in ice hockey.
Wikipedia has a lot of cool information about the origins, customs, and history of this trophy, that started out as a small bowl.
NHL.com has all things professional hockey. You can get scores from the games, schedules, who’s playing who, and who is the current holder of the cup.
The Canadian Encyclopedia has some wonderful facts about the cup and some really cool links to other hockey related sites.
The Hockey Hall of Fame is located in Toronto, Canada. It is an awesome place if you are a hockey fan. It houses the original Stanley Cup, jerseys from key historical figures in hockey history, and even has a theatre, complete with a hockey movie about the history of the Cup.
Now if you live in Michigan, you know that the best team is the Detroit Red Wings. They are housed at the Joe Louis Arena. You can find all kinds of information, stats, injury reports, as well as a full history of the Wings!
Wikipedia also has a page about the Red Wings, which is quite nice.
One of my favorite things about the Wings is the fans. They are crazy and die hard! You can see fans going crazy after a goal, and during the playoffs, you usually will see an octopus being hurled onto the ice. There is even one man, Al Sobotka who is the keeper of the octopus. You will always see him after an octopus is thrown, and it’s always the same guy. He also drives the Zamboni! You can read all about this tradition, Al the Octopus, and Mr. Sobotka on the Wiki page above.
Well, I hope that you will enjoy looking up and reading into my favorite sport, or even tuning in to the playoffs yourselves. I know I will be at home with a beer, the TV tuned in to the playoffs, and cheering on my favorite team in the coming weeks. Get your octopi ready, because it’s almost game time!
Go Wings!
