About The Glass Castle: A Memoir
Incoming first-year students, current students, alumni, faculty, staff, and parents are invited to read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. Soon to be a major film, The Glass Castle enjoyed over 8 years on The New York Times “Bestseller List,” has won several major awards and has been adopted as a Common Reading selection at Colleges and Universities across the country. We believe that The Glass Castle will enliven our Orientation and fall programming this year. Walls writes about her unorthodox life with unflinching candor and compassion and speaks of her family with love and understanding.
As a tool for discussion , the memoir addresses important social problems – poverty, childhood hunger, homelessness, sexual abuse, alcoholism – and explores major themes - family, love, change, and personal resilience - that we think contribute to an engaging fall semester.
