Consumers Energy SmartStreet
On October 24, 2011, senior sociology students partnered with the Consumers Energy SmartStreet initiative to facilitate focus groups with project participants. SmartStreet meters were installed in 60 businesses and homes in the Grand Rapids East Hills neighborhood in 2010. In addition to an energy audit, pilot project participants could track and then modify their energy use based on feedback from the meter with real-time information available to them through a web portal. Aquinas sociology majors facilitated focus groups to collect feedback from residential and commercial participants, and organizations that partnered with Consumers Energy on the project.
Sociology majors Sarah Allen, Sarah Williams, Erin Meyer, Suzanne Click, Charlie Range, and Ellen Meyer worked with Dr. Kathy Kremer to facilitate the sessions and provide written summaries of the content to the SmartStreet team. |

Ice Cream Social
In October 2011, students in Dr. Susan Haworth-Heoppner's SY312 Social Stratification course partnered with Degage Ministries for an ice cream social and bingo night. Students donated gloves, scarves, and other needs for those community members who use Degage services. The sociology majors and minors also shared ice cream and played bingo at the center. Each day Degage serves 400-500 homeless and otherwise disadvantaged Grand Rapids residents.

AQ Sociology Students Examine a "Small Town" Success
A group of Aquinas College sociology students want to find out what small towns are doing to survive. In early March 2010, Associate Professor of Sociology Kathy Kremer took her class on a excursion to Ottawa County where they looked at what community leaders are doing in Coopersville to keep their town alive and well. Advance Newspapers covered the students' trip. >>Read the Article
