A national guide for colleges has recognized Aquinas College as one of the renowned 2019-2020 Colleges of Distinction for Aquinas’ individualized and engaging academic offerings and continued focus on student success and satisfaction.

The national recognition is unique, as Aquinas receives the state and national honors for excellence exhibited in and out the classroom as well as for a Catholic and Dominican tradition.

At Aquinas, students are actively involved in academics, campus activities and community engagement in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and beyond. Students combine liberal arts excellence in the classroom with experiential learning, leadership opportunities and engagement activities that take the totality of their experiences on campus out into the world for the common good.

Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction, said that it is encouraging to find Aquinas College take such an innovative approach with its curriculum.

“Its high-impact educational practices ensure that the undergraduate experience is worthwhile and unique,” he said.

Such student-centered programs include student internships, study away, undergraduate research, service learning, interdisciplinary academic programs, diversity and inclusion programs, first-year experience and more.

“We know that every student is different in what they need to best learn, grow and succeed,” Schritter said. “Aquinas College puts the student experience first, providing all the tools and opportunities they need to become lifelong learners who are ready to take on any challenge in today’s ever-evolving society.”

Colleges of Distinction’s selection process consists of detailed interviews and research for each institution’s first-year experience and retention efforts alongside its general education programs, career development, strategic plan, student satisfaction and more. Schools are accepted on the basis that they adhere to the “four distinctions:” engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes.
