GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer Vice Chairman Mark Murray will deliver the commencement address to Aquinas College’s Class of 2019 on Saturday, May 11. He will also receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.

Prior to his role of vice chairman, Murray previously served both as co-CEO and president of Meijer following his tenure as president of Grand Valley State University.

He also served in many roles in Michigan state government, including state treasurer and state budget director, a position that held overall responsibility for formulation and administration of budgets for all state agencies. In the period between being state budget director and state treasurer, Murray served as vice president for finance and administration at Michigan State University responsible for non-academic matters at the university: finance, housing, facilities, security and athletics.

“It is a great honor for the Aquinas community that Mark Murray has accepted our invitation to deliver the commencement address,” Aquinas College President Kevin Quinn said. “Mr. Murray is a guiding force not only in West Michigan, but across the state. He is an exemplar of service to the community, which resonates with the goals of our college and the hopes of our new graduates.”

Murray has served on many community boards over the years, including Detroit Public Schools, Spectrum Health, Business Leaders for Michigan and the Michigan State Chamber of Commerce.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to speak to the talented women and men who will receive their diplomas,” Murray said. “West Michigan is fortunate to have them and Aquinas College in our midst.”

Murray received a bachelor’s degree in Economics and a master’s degree in Labor and Industrial Relations, both from Michigan State University.

Previous commencement speakers include Steelcase CEO James Keane (2018), Founder and Chairman of 42 North Partners Michael Jandernoa (2017), and President and CEO of Autocam Medical John Kennedy (2016).

Commencement will be held at the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center at Aquinas College at 1 p.m. on May 11. Tickets are limited to graduates and their family and friends. More information about commencement exercises is available at
