With ArtPrize 2022 happening now through October 2, WOOD TV8 found it a good time to reflect on the Aquinas College connection to ArtPrize.

It was Chris LaPorte's monumental drawing "Cavalry, American Officers, 1921" which won ArtPrize in 2010. That piece is now on display near the entrance of the Grace Hauenstein Library.

LaPorte, a 1996 graduate of Aquinas, is also an Associate Professor of Art at Aquinas. During the WOOD TV8 interview, LaPorte credited Aquinas with "broadening his perspectives on life and developing a unique ability to bring his art to life."

The additional connection to ArtPrize is Aquinas alumna Chelsea Nix and her 2018 Public Vote Winner "The String Project." This inspirational collection of 40 photographs of people from all over the world appears to show one string connecting everyone.

Both works of art boldly embrace two of the Dominican pillars, community and service, with their focus on connectivity and inclusiveness.
