Real World Math Experience
The mission of the Mathematics Department at Aquinas College is directly linked to the mission of the College in that it provides a program for all students that is an essential part of a liberal arts education. It promotes the study of mathematics in depth in preparation for graduate school or an immediate career, supports the mathematical needs of other disciplines, and supplies a curriculum for all students to enhance their understanding of mathematical thought.
Upon completing a major in mathematics:
- Students will be able to approach complex problems with creativity and persistence.
- Students will be able to give an insightful statement about how mathematics fits into a liberal arts curriculum.
- Students will be able to verbally explain and discuss mathematics using precise language and an audience appropriate delivery.
- Students will be able to produce mathematical writing that uses proper terminology, notation, and proof techniques
- Students will be able to provide several specific examples of connections among various branches of mathematics, such as calculus, linear algebra, and abstract algebra.
- Students will be able to effectively use technology to support mathematical inquiry.

News from the Mathematics Department
Seven years after its founding, the Juan Olivarez STEM Scholars Program continues to provide participants with the resources, community support and skill building workshops they need to succeed at Aquinas College. This summer, Dr. Joseph Spencer is conducting research with Edin Mehanovic, a senior math major and data analytics minor, through the Mohler-Thompson Summer Research Program to better understand a game mechanism you might recognize: Mancala. These Mohler-Thompson Summer Researchers are studying the genes of anemones to better understand coral bleaching.
