He has performed with GRCT, Circle, Actors', JTGR, Ebony Road and GVSU. His most recent directing accomplishment was Judgement at Nuremberg for JTGR. Bud is also an award-winning, published (through Dramatic Publishing) and internationally produced playwright and an award-winning composer/performer of acoustic folk/rock music. He fills his semi-retired days with running Theatrical Mementos, which has produced a majority of the show shirts in the GR area for the past 25 years. Thanks to you for coming to see the show, and to God, who got us all this far… again. |

Director's Note
What you are about to witness is a triumph of will.
Certainly that of Benjamin Saar. By the time Benjamin’s yellow boat sailed up into the sun in 1987, at least half of the hemophiliac population in the United States (more than 8,000 people) had contracted AIDS from a blood transfusion. Some were famous: tennis legend Arthur Ashe was one, as well as Ryan White, a teenager from Indiana, who was befriended and championed by Sir Elton John.
Benjamin Saar has this play, written by his father, to memorialize not only Benjamin's tragic course of events, but more importantly his unstoppable talent, imagination, love of life and ability to focus on the fact that there is bright to be found, no matter how dark the journey. And it should also remind the rest of us that compassion, knowledge and understanding ("[My mom] read a bunch of stuff, we all talked about it, and she changed her mind," Eddy says) are forever vital necessities... and often in short supply.
But this performance is also a triumph for this community of artists, who have realized this show in the face of daunting circumstances, extremely limited time, and thanks to the talent, hard work, patience, flexibility and trust of every single actor and designer whose accomplishments you are about to witness.
Thank you for being here and for joining us on this journey: the one whose story we are about to tell... and the one that brought us all here today.
G.M. (Bud) Thompson
Director
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Aquinas College Theatre acknowledges that those who live, study, teach, and work at Aquinas College have the privilege of doing so upon land taken from the traditional homeland of the Three Fires Confederacy tribal people: the Odawa, Ojibwe, and the Bodewadmi. These peoples lived on and stewarded the land now known as the Great Lakes region for generations before settlers arrived. It is important to acknowledge and denounce the societal and state sanctioned violence, theft, and genocide inflicted on indigenous peoples to benefit settlers, colonial powers, as well as those who currently live within West Michigan. These words are not enough, but may prompt us to wonder how each of us might act to restore relations and stand in solidarity with the Anishinaabek, the first people of this land.
