Sven Birkerts will give a presentation at Aquinas College on Thursday, April 20. The evening reading and discussion will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Wege Center Ballroom.
The event is free and open to the public.
Birkerts has taught writing at Harvard University, Emerson College, Amherst and is currently a lecturer at Mt. Holyoke College. He is also a core member of the Bennington Writing Seminars. Since July of 2002, Birkerts has been the editor of AGNI, the web-based version of the acclaimed literary journal and edited Tolstoy’s Dictaphone: Writers and the Muse (Greywolf), Writing Well (with Donald Hall) and The Evolving Canon (Allyn & Bacon). He is the author of six books including An Artificial Wilderness: Essays on 20th Century Literature (William Morrow), American Energies: Essays on Fiction (William Morrow), The Gutenberg Elegies: The Fate of Reading in an Electronic Age (Faber & Faber) and My Sky Blue Trades: Growing Up Counter in a Contrary Time (2002 Viking) to name a few.
Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Foundation and the Guggenheim Foundation have awarded grants to Birkerts. He was the winner of the Citation for Excellence in Reviewing from the National Book Critics Circle in 1985 and the Spielvogel-Diamonstein Award from PEN for the best book essays in 1990.
The Aquinas College Contemporary Writers Series was founded by a grant from Tony Foster, M.D. '73 and Linda Nemec Foster '72. The series kicked off in 1997 by bringing well-known authors to Aquinas College for a public reading and a workshop with students. Nobel Prize winning poet Seamus Heaney will be a special guest of the Aquinas Contemporary Writers Series on Wednesday, May 10, 2006.
