Beth Shulman, author of "The Betrayal of Work: How Low-Wage Jobs Fail 30 Million Americans
and Their Families" will present two lectures on Wednesday, October 13. The 11:30
a.m. luncheon presentation is a fundraiser for the Jane Hibbard Idema Women's Studies
Center and is part of the Center's "Women Make a Difference Luncheon Lecture Series."
Shulman's talk is titled "Low Wage Jobs: A Women's Issue." The cost of the luncheon
is $100 and reservations can be made by calling (616) 632-2822.
The 7 p.m. presentation is free and the public is welcome. At that time Schulman will speak on "Where the Jobs are: Can They Sustain Families?" The two events are in the Wege Student Center Ballroom.
For over 25 years, Shulman served the 1.5 million member United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) as general counsel, regional organizing and bargaining director in the Midwestern states and, from 1987-1999 as vice president and director of the UFCW's Health Care, Insurance, Finance and Professional Employees Division. She served on President Clinton's Advisory Council for School to Work Opportunities along with other national boards and committees.
She currently sits on the executive boards of the Financial Markets Center, the Economic and Social Research Institute, Ayuda, and the Perry School Community Services Center.
Shulman has appeared on PBS's "Now with Bill Moyers," CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight and NPR's "Talk of the Nation." Her most recent articles have been published in The Washington Post, Perspectives on Work and The American Prospect.
Having grown up in Los Angeles, California, Shulman received an undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of California at Los Angeles. She earned her law degree from Georgetown Law Center.
