Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) is pleased to announce that Sr. Katrina Hartman, Chemistry Department Chairperson at Aquinas College, has been awarded a Community Engagement Grant for the 2002-2003 academic year. Hartman's project "Get the Lead Out! Partnership" will team with the community to collect household dust samples to be tested for the presence of hazardous lead dust. Community partners (Urban Hope and the Baxter Neighborhood Association) will lead the effort to collect household dust samples, and Aquinas Chemistry students will be engaged in the technical and statistical analysis. A Community Report Card will be developed and disseminated in an effort to protect neighborhood children from lead poisoning the nation's leading environmental threat to children.

Hartman is one of eleven recipients of a Community Engagement Grant this year. These grants are financial awards ranging up to $2,000 for the development and implementation of a partnership between an institution of higher education AND a community based organization OR a K-12 school system. Grants are intended to support collaborations between institutions of higher education and the local community, to include students, and to enhance the professional development of all involved. A higher education representative and a community representative must design a project collaboratively in order to meet a demonstrated community need.

Funds for this project are made possible through the Corporation for National and Community Service under the Learn and Serve America: Higher Education program area. Faculty and staff from Michigan Campus Compact member campuses are eligible to apply. Michigan Campus Compact is a state-level non-profit organization that promotes the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically engaged citizens, through creating and expanding academic, co-curricular and campus-wide opportunities for community service, service-learning and civic engagement.
