Tim Vermeulen will be exhibiting oil paintings for a show in the Art and Music Center Gallery. The works in this show are small, figurative, narrative and autobiographical. The narratives, while formed through self-portraiture, are often based on established stories or series from literary sources. The sources are put into a contemporary and personal context, and they refer to such issues as private anxiety about the body, the battle between the true self and the false self, and the elusive task of personality integration. The bulk of the show will be comprised of a series of 24 paintings based on Dante's Inferno that Vermeulen has been working on for the past two years.

Vermeulen is currently an associate professor of art at Mount Saint Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He has a bachelor of arts from Calvin College and a master of fine arts in painting from the University of Illinois. His work is represented by Gescheidle Gallery in Chicago, Illinois.

Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 2 to 6 p.m. A reception will be held on September 25, 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibit and reception are free and the public is welcome. The Gallery is closed September 4, 5 and 6.
