UDM nursing students at Aquinas learn in a variety of locations and environments on campus and around Grand Rapids.
Aquinas’ Albertus Magnus Hall of Science
The science building houses numerous classrooms, labs, kitchenettes, and quiet study spaces where students collaborate or study individually.
Simulation (Sim) Lab: Conveniently located on campus in the science building, there is a simulation (SIM) lab with high-fidelity manikins— adult, maternity, pediatric, and infant. The simulation lab replicates a real-life hospital setting where active learning takes place in a risk-free environment.
Anatomage Table: The Anatomage Table is an advanced interactive touchscreen workstation where students explore 3D digital human bodies. It’s an essential tool in anatomy and physiology coursework and complements the SIM lab learning experience.
Trinity Health Grand Rapids Skills Lab
Sophomore nursing students learn nursing skills at Trinity Health Grand Rapids (THGR). As our program partner, THGR provides a dedicated skills lab with current hospital equipment and instruments. It’s a convenient learning space just 2.3 miles down the road from Aquinas’ campus.
Clinical Sites
Students begin clinicals the first semester of their sophomore year and continue until graduation.
Clinicals include extended care facilities (nursing homes), medical/surgical, pediatrics, obstetrics (labor & delivery), psychiatric nursing, and community. The final clinical is "immersion"— where senior nursing students are paired with an experienced nurse in a hospital setting.
Clinical sites vary by semester; all clinical sites are in the Grand Rapids area.
Current clinical sites include:
- Trinity Health Grand Rapids (Inpatient and outpatient settings)
- Corewell Health
- Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital
- Pine Rest Psychiatric Hospital
- Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital
- Area nursing homes
- Various community health clinics and agencies
The clinical supervision ratio is one faculty member supervisor for every six to eight students, allowing individualized attention for each student.
