Grand Rapids, Michigan (September 24, 2003) --- Aquinas College will induct more than
a dozen people into both its College Hall of Fame and Athletic Hall of Fame during
ceremonies scheduled for Friday, September 26, 2003 in the College's Wege Student
Center Ballroom. The evening-long Hall of Fame Gala begins at 6:30 p.m., followed
with dinner at 7:30 p.m. and the Awards Ceremony starting at 8:00 p.m.
This year, the honorees include Sr. Aquinas Weber, O.P. '58 a longtime community activist who helped establish the Eastown Neighborhood Project and is a Chancellor Emerita of Aquinas College. In addition, the College will also induct Kenneth Marin, a 1947 alumnus and Professor Emeritus in Economics; and, the late Marcia Miller Clapp, a 1946 alumna and the College's former director for both alumni and public relations.
Entering into the Athletic Hall of Fame is the College's first team. The 1963 Golf Team, which earned a second-place finish at the NCAA invitation-only tournament in fall of that year.
The team included: Coach Dick McCormick (deceased), Len Bridge '64 (deceased), Frank Berles '64, Tom Gunn '67, David Kamm '64, John Kurzynowski '66 and Ron Miller '66. Individual Athletic Hall of Fame inductees include: Ralph Coleman '61 (basketball), Tom Carr '75 (Track and Field), Lori (Grochowalski '85) Karas (basketball) and Dave Gumpert '86 (baseball).
The College will also honor two alumni for their service to the College and the community, at large. The recipient of the Alumni Board Member of the Year will be announced Friday night. However, the School will also honor Percy Brown '87, a Grand Rapids Police Officer since 1975, who is being recognized for his extensive work with Youth Commonwealth and for running sports programs for area youth.
The College's Hall of Fame, which was established last year, was created to recognize outstanding contributions to the College and lifelong achievements by distinguished alumni and friends of the College. The Athletic Hall of Fame was developed to honor the outstanding achievements of former student athletes, teams and their coaches. In addition, the Hall of Fame Gala encompasses the College's Alumni Association Awards, which honor alumni and non-alumni, alike, who have made significant contributions to the College.
