Aquinas College Assistant Professor of Spanish Dr. Mary Orlicki was honored Thursday,
February 8, 2007 with a Michigan Campus Compact Faculty/Staff Community Service-Learning
Award at the 11th annual Institute meeting in Livonia. This prestigious annual award
is the highest MCC bestows on faculty and staff in the state of Michigan.
Dr. Orlicki was designated by peers as the faculty/staff person on campus who has made the most outstanding contributions in service-learning and community service. This award recognizes her influence on and engagement of students to be involved in community service or service-learning through modeling, instructing and/or special projects. Dr. Orlicki was nominated by Mr. Eric Bridge, Coordinator of Service Learning at Aquinas.
As professor of the Oaxaca, Mexico course, Dr. Orlicki thoughtfully and intentionally designed her course with service-learning components. Last year, she coordinated cultural dinners, conducted fair trade fundraisers and accompanied her students to Oaxaca, Mexico. She challenged her students to integrate their intellectual preparation with practical experience and to become personally involved with Spanish speaking people in the community. Dr. Orlicki's passion is clearly evident to her students, and her personal engagement and advocacy for social justice are unparalleled.
